The Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) is a 150-mile system of hiking and biking trails that connect Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Maryland, winding through some of the world’s most beautiful terrain. It is part of the Allegheny Trail Alliance rails-to-trails project, which converted the old railroad that once connected Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., into a total 335-mile biking and hiking trail. Because of the trail’s railroad history, the trail itself is flat and wide, mostly hard dirt – perfect for bikers and hikers of any age, regardless of experience.
