Hold Points and Break Points

Recently, I was watching some experienced shooters participating in a corporate shoot. Corporate shoots usually do not have tournament grade targets set for the event. But they will have two or three challenging “separator stations” to keep from having too many ties. I watched some good shooters drop one or two targets out of a six shot station.

The reasoning behind this is that they start out with a hold point, a break point and focal point and then break the pair. Then they repeat the pre-shot routine of a break point, a hold point, focal point and break the next pair. They feel like they have it down and assume they can break the last pair and don’t repeat the pre-shot routine or hold points. So they are mimicking the move without programming the brain.

You need to use your eyes and give the brain the visual and information it needs to complete the shot. We get sloppy and assume it will break. Never change your pre-shot routine. Always pick a break point, a hold point and a focal point before every shot. This will produce consistency and more broken targets. After all isn’t that what our goal is? We all want more broken targets.
