May Fishing ReportBy Justin Sparklin, Fly Fishing CoordinatorWhat an April! We had sun. We had rain. We even had snow. The fishing has been hot and cold, just like the weather. Lake Gosling has been stocked several times and the lake's trophy trout have been on the feed. Calibaetis mayflies have been hatching in good numbers throughout the day and midges have been taking fish as well. If there is too much wind or if the sun is high, try small beadhead nymphs fished just offshore or throwing small streamers along the lake's drop-offs. Members have been catching fish on Griffiths gnats (#20-22), grey comparaduns (#16-18) and beadhead pheasant tails and copper johns in assorted sizes. We have plenty of hot flies stocked at the Orvis outfitters store at the sporting clays lodge. The Fish for Fun areas have been stocked and are fishing well. Small spinners, spoons and soft plastics have been taking trout up to 20 inches. Some of the property's bass ponds are starting to turn on with several anglers reporting nice catches on tube jigs and swim baits. Look for the property's bass to begin getting active as water temperatures climb. |
